At Lucy’s Link Tours and Safaris, we had the unforgettable experience of celebrating Koningsdag (King’s Day) right in the heart of The Hague, Netherlands. This national holiday, held every 27th of April, is a joyful celebration of King Willem-Alexander’s birthday — and it transforms cities across the country into lively seas of orange.
The entire nation unites in festivity, and we were thrilled to be part of it. Streets were filled with music, laughter, and dance, while people of all ages dressed in vibrant orange, the royal color representing the House of Orange-Nassau — the Dutch royal family’s lineage. The energy was truly contagious!
A Rich Royal Tradition
King’s Day dates back to 1885, originally celebrated as Princess’s Day in honor of Princess Wilhelmina. Over the years, it evolved into Queen’s Day, and since 2013, it has become King’s Day following King Willem-Alexander’s ascension to the throne on April 30, 2013. The King, married to Queen Máxima, continues to uphold this cherished tradition with pride. His birthplace, Utrecht, along with cities like Amsterdam and The Hague, come alive with parades, concerts, and public celebrations.

How We Celebrated in The Hague
In The Hague, where we joined the celebration, the festive atmosphere was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced.
- Boat parades filled the canals with music and laughter
- Open-air concerts showcased both local and international talent
- The streets became home to vrijmarkten (open-air flea markets), where families sold second-hand treasures
- Spontaneous street performances and traditional Dutch dancing created a spirit of connection and unity
We couldn’t resist joining in on the fun — dancing to the beat of the drums, sampling Dutch snacks, and even picking up a few keepsakes from the flea markets.
A Celebration of Dutch Identity
Koningsdag is more than a royal birthday — it’s a powerful expression of Dutch identity, unity, and national pride. Wearing orange on this day is more than tradition; it’s a symbol of belonging. And on this vibrant day, we felt like part of the Dutch family.
Long live the King! Lang leve de Koning!
