During our travels through the Netherlands, we had the incredible privilege of visiting the Dutch Parliament (Staten-Generaal) in The Hague a site that powerfully represents the spirit of democracy, inclusivity, and human rights. This wasn’t just a tour of a government building; it was a journey through centuries of social progress and political transformation.
📜 A Parliament Rooted in History
The Dutch Parliament traces its origins to the 15th century, originally assembled by the Dukes of Burgundy. Over the centuries, it played pivotal roles especially during the Dutch Revolt in the 16th century, which led to independence from Spanish rule.
A defining moment came in 1848, when constitutional scholar Johan Rudolph Thorbecke championed reforms that transformed the Netherlands into a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. Standing inside the historic Binnenhof, we felt the profound weight of governance, negotiation, and progress that has shaped the Dutch people’s freedom.

A Champion of Equal Representation
What impressed us deeply was the Netherlands’ unwavering commitment to equality. In 1922, Dutch women gained the right to vote a bold move for the era and today, women make up around 40% of the House of Representatives, placing the Netherlands among the global leaders in gender representation in government.
But inclusivity doesn’t stop at gender.
- In 2023, the Dutch Constitution was amended to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on disability, among other grounds an inspiring step forward for human rights.
- The country invests in programs that uplift the youth, inviting their voices into policymaking spaces.
- Importantly, the elderly are respected stakeholders, with their concerns on health, quality of life, and dignity directly influencing national decisions.
This multi-generational, intersectional approach reminds us that democracy should leave no one behind not women, not youth, not older persons, and not persons with disabilities.
What We Took Away
Touring the Parliament reminded us that democracy isn’t just a system it’s a shared responsibility to uplift every voice. We left feeling hopeful about what societies can accomplish when governance is guided by fairness, inclusion, and dignity.
